David Cameron, the UK’s foreign secretary, recently held a video call with Petro Poroshenko, the former president of Ukraine. Except it wasn’t Poroshenko at all. It was a fake. This weekend the Foreign Office hinted that the hoaxer may have used AI to mask his real identity, saying that “the video call clearly appeared to be with Mr Poroshenko”. A spokesman warned that manipulation of the “information environment is becoming ever more present.” Cameron himself should arguably have known better. In 2019 he took a lucrative job at a US AI firm partly specialising in fraud detection.
