Every day between now and the election, Tortoise’s Alexi Mostrous will examine a claim from the campaign trail. Some will be outlandish, some believable. Some might even be true.
Tory election hopefuls are trying to distance themselves from their own party by publishing campaign literature in any colour but blue. Greg Clark’s leaflets, for instance, are styled like a ‘90s imprint of Hello!, with a bright pink banner and a big yellow “YOU” as the title. Kit Malthouse’s are cream and purple. Mhairi Fraser’s are lime green and puce. The words Tory, Conservative, Rishi, and Westminster are all notable by their absence. But the prize for electoral chutzpah surely goes to Robert Largan, whose campaign posted a graphic on Saturday reading “Labour for Langan” in bright red, as if he were a candidate for the party. The MP said he did it because “so many” local Labour voters supported his re-election. FullFact, the fact checking service, called it “blatantly deceptive”.
