UK election 2024: Who is...Luke Akehurst?

One person, each day, to help make sense of the election.

Akehurst isn’t known for any personal connection to North Durham, but he is known as Keir Starmer’s most ruthless enforcer when it comes to antisemitism. He studied in Bristol, served as a councillor in Hackney, lives in Oxford, directs a cross-party lobby group called We Believe in Israel, and sits on Labour’s National Executive Committee. In approving candidates he games out worst-case scenarios like hung parliaments and says he wants only “solid votes for the party”. Translation: solidly centrist and pro-Israel.
