The jury in Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York began its deliberations last night. But the film star Robert De Niro didn’t wait to register his verdict. The star of The Godfather and Goodfellas movies declared that the former president was guilty and should go to jail. “Whether he’s acquitted, whether it’s a hung jury, whatever it is, he is guilty and we all know it,” he told the media gathered outside the courthouse. De Niro was apparently appearing at the direction of the Biden presidential campaign, which has hitherto resisted making capital of the felony charges against Trump. Trump’s response was to share the footage and describe the double Oscar-winner as a “washed-up actor”. The real verdict may not come until next week.
