As parties vie for votes with promises they may or may not keep, Tortoise is asking public and not-so-public figures for the one thing they hope for from Britain’s next government.
“I hope that there will be a return to greater civility and respect in public life. Much of the language and debate over the past few years has felt so divisive – the old against the young; London against the rest of the country; people of different faiths or genders or sexual preferences pitted against one another. The so-called culture wars. I think the vast majority of British people are tolerant and respectful of one another. More unites than divides us. Most of us want to live a good life, and want our children to be better off than us. I am looking forward to whichever party wins the next election conveying a message of unity and working hard to bring all parts of the country together.”
