Has Hollywood forgotten how to make movies?

“The question is, do you have it in you to make it epic?” Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus asks in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The answer seems to be no. The film had a disastrous opening four-day weekend, taking $32 million. As of Monday, Hollywood had taken $128 million in total, the worst Memorial Day weekend in 43 years when adjusted for inflation. According to data from Box Office Mojo, there is a direct relationship between Memorial Day receipts and total summer hauls – big weekend equals big summer. The inverse is true too, and The Fall Guy, Mean Girls, Civil War, Argyll and Madame Web have all flopped. Prequels, sequels, reboots, remakes and original stories are all failing. Has Hollywood forgotten how to make movies?
