The Conservatives’ campaign director is not one to hog the limelight, but he plays a pivotal role. Levido honed his craft under Lynton Crosby, helping secure Boris Johnson’s 80-seat majority in 2019. He shaped Sunak’s five pledges and told Tories last year there was a “narrow path” to victory, deploying the so-called 80-20 strategy – defend 80 seats and gain 20. Levido was against an early election, telling MPs as recently as mid-May that longer was needed to change voters’ minds. Described by one colleague as “not a prick”, Levido is now “knuckling down” to turn the party’s fortunes around.
