AI deep fakes spell election trouble

The spectacle of Rishi Sunak getting soaked to the sound of Things Can Only Get Better was almost too unbelievable to script, but it was real – something voters will have to get better at judging as the election draws near. In India, where almost a billion people are eligible to vote in the country’s election, political parties and third parties have used AI to create deep fakes and propaganda clips – while Indian politicians are using AI-generated videos of themselves for voter outreach, according to Wired (sanctioned deep fakes have become a $60 million industry). Sunak and Keir Starmer are unlikely to resort to AI-versions of themselves to persuade voters. But both have already been subject to deepfake attacks and will almost certainly be targeted again. Verify, then trust.
