If the 2000s were about Crossfit and the 2010s about HIIT, this decade is about immortality. It’s a bit of an upgrade, but while the American futurist Ray Kurzweil is taking 210 pills a day and hoping for “nanobots” in his bloodstream in his quest to live forever, the already eye-wateringly expensive gym chain Equinox is offering a more modest “100 health years” – as long as you sign up to a “longevity hacking” $42,000-a-year membership plan called Optimize. For $3,000 per month, plus membership fees, an Equinox concierge offers a “lifelong routine of 100+ lab tests” as well as the gym’s in-house fitness screenings. In a move that will surprise no-one, this includes three weekly sessions with a personal trainer. After three years of losses, the Equinox chain is also leaning into Ozempic, with “certified coaches to navigate pharma-assisted weight loss journeys”.
