The estate of the dead rapper, Tupac Shakur, has threatened to sue the living rapper, Drake, for releasing a song featuring an AI-generated version of the late rapper’s voice. Tupac, who died in 1996, was digitally resurrected using AI to feature in a song called Taylor Made Freestyle, which lambasts yet another rapper, Kendrick Lamar. Billboard reports that lawyer Howard King, who represents Shakur’s estate, called the track a “blatant abuse of his legacy” and demanded the song be taken down from streaming sites. An AI-generated clone of Snoop Dogg’s voice also appeared in the new Drake song, but his response was less fiery. In an Instagram video, a confused-looking Snoop Dogg said: “They did what? When?... I’m going back to bed.” A first-of-its-kind law passed in Tennessee in March called the Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security (ELVIS) Act. It aims to protect musicians against “the misuse of AI”. Will other states follow suit?
