Zendaya’s route to becoming the star of her generation is almost assured. This twisted romance, set in the world of professional tennis, tries to resolve the career tension of Gen Z wild child vs future Marilyn Monroe. The plot? Thirteen years ago, her character, Tashi, teased fellow tennis hopefuls Art (Mike Faist) and Patrick (Josh O’Connor) into a fluid three-way. Today, a knee injury has ended her career and she’s channelled her drive into husband Art, booking him to play a now second-tier Patrick in what should be an easy win. Of course, old feelings surface and tennis-match grunting over balls is the metaphor that just won’t quit. Luca Guadagnino’s film weaves together a tale of hubris and young love, with Zendaya offering a career-best performance filled with sexual tension. Has she graduated to the mainstream, or does she remain a challenger? Deuce. New balls please…
