The number of refugees needing homelessness support in London after being evicted from asylum accommodation rose by 239 per cent to almost 3,300 in the two years up to the third quarter of 2023, according to the Refugee Council. When a person receives refugee status, they are given 28 days to find secure housing before facing eviction. The council’s chief executive, Enver Solomon, urged doubling the move-on period to 56 days and imposing a legal duty on the Home Office to refer people at risk of homelessness to local authorities. Also this week: a report from the Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI) found two-thirds of all aid spending, £2.9 billion, on refugees and asylum seekers in the UK was spent by the Home Office – of which £2.5 billion was on asylum accommodation. Total aid spending on asylum seekers and refugees in the UK rose to £4.3 billion in 2023 – 28 per cent of the total aid budget.
