After five long, calamitous months, the UN Security Council finally passed a resolution yesterday calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The United States abstained from the 14-0 vote, which allowed it to pass. Washington has come under increasing pressure after vetoing three previous ceasefire resolutions, while a US-proposed text was vetoed by Russia and China last week. The new resolution, which calls for a ceasefire for the rest of the Ramadan holy month and demands the immediate release of all hostages, is considered binding under international law but is hard to enforce. Netanyahu responded by cancelling a planned high-level Israeli visit to Washington to discuss a looming invasion of Rafah.
