On Wednesday afternoon, Donald Trump found himself unexpectedly united with America’s young progressives. Both are opposed to a bill that breezed through a vote in the US House, which would force China-based parent ByteDance to sell TikTok or face the app being banned in its biggest market. The bill’s success so far is remarkable for its speed – it was introduced last Tuesday, passed unanimously through committee on Thursday and secured President Biden’s backing on Friday. It passed the House vote this week by 352-65. It was also unexpected: TikTok executives reportedly flew to Singapore HQ two weeks ago believing the video-sharing app was safe, partly because Biden’s 2024 campaign recently joined. The bill now faces a Senate vote and anticipated legal challenges – not to mention 170 million heartbroken US users.
