Washington found something it could agree on last week: a bipartisan bill forcing China’s ByteDance to sell TikTok within 165 days or face removal from US app stores passed through the committee stage with a 50-0 vote. The bill is being fast-tracked to a House vote this week, with both political parties keen to “take on China”, to quote House Speaker Mike Johnson. The wrinkle? Donald Trump, who has come out against the bill despite trying to ban the video-sharing app himself in 2020 on national security grounds. On Monday, Trump said banning TikTok would help Facebook, which he called an “enemy of the people”. Media reports also point to a recent meeting with billionaire TikTok investor Jeff Yass (Trump said they didn't discuss TikTok), and the simple fact that he recognises the app’s appeal to younger voters.
