Tinder assists police after Colombia dating deaths

Tinder has agreed to collaborate with Colombian police by providing them with “in-app information” from its crime reporting portal, following a spate of deaths linked to dating apps. Forty-one tourists were victims of “violent killings” in Colombia in 2023, according to data from the Medellín Tourism Observatory – up 40 per cent on the previous year. In November and December, eight Americans died in suspicious circumstances, prompting the US embassy to issue a warning about the risks of using dating apps abroad. Tinder is famously secretive with its information, and its decision to collaborate with local police was made at a stakeholder meeting in Colombia on 29 February, reported by Rest of World. The hope is that the data will aid the police’s investigations, but questions remain about whether dating apps should be doing more to protect their users in the first place.
