New York sues beef group over net zero claims

“Bacon, chicken wings and steak with net zero emissions. It’s possible,” the advert said. New York’s attorney-general Letitia James disagrees; she is suing JBS, the world’s biggest meat processing company, for “misleading claims” about its environmental impact. The lawsuit says JBS claimed it would achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, despite plans to increase production. The Brazilian company, a major supplier of beef, pork and poultry globally, reported producing 71 million metric tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2021, more than the country of Ireland. JBS said it disagreed with the attorney general’s actions. The lawsuit coincides with JBS plans for a public listing in the US, which is not expected to happen until the second half of this year.
