A lot of questions and one answer emerge after Russia leaked a 38-minute recorded phone call between senior German military officials discussing the potential deployment of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine. How did Russia get it? The audio, first posted on Telegram on Friday by the head of the RT state broadcaster, was from a February phone call, with officers reportedly using the US communications platform Webex over unsecure phone lines (some, including the UK’s former defence secretary, have also made pointed remarks about Germany’s infiltration by Russian intelligence). The motive? Germany’s defence minister described it as part of an “information war” on Sunday, saying the leak was intended to undermine any such missile delivery. Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, has refused to send the missiles to Kyiv so far because of fears of escalation. But if Russia is worried enough to publicly interfere in this way, the answer is obvious. Send them.
