Why Nikki Haley doesn’t mind a loss in her home state

Nikki Haley’s home state of South Carolina votes tomorrow on its nominee for the Republican presidential nomination. The state polls aren’t promising much: Haley is trailing Donald Trump by around 30 points. But she has pledged to keep campaigning at least through to Super Tuesday on 5 March, saying this week that she felt “no need to kiss the ring”. She is still managing to raise money: her campaign pulled in $11.5 million in January, her best month so far. But Haley can’t keep up the pace of earlier ad spends – including more than $60 million on advertising in Iowa and New Hampshire. Instead, she’s placing her hope in the courts. Trump’s first criminal court case begins on 25 March. Haley is hoping that if she holds on long enough, Trump’s legal battles could dent his momentum. Those are long odds – analysts are projecting Trump will sew up the nomination by 19 March.
