More news from the Munich Security Conference, where David Lammy was as involved as anyone in efforts to boost defence cooperation and capacity between the UK and the EU. The context was the intensifying Russian threat and the thought of Trump reneging on Nato’s mutual security guarantees, but if you didn't know that you might have thought that when Lammy said "the Brexit era is over, the situation is settled," he meant just that. Lammy is the UK's shadow foreign secretary and will therefore almost certainly be the UK's actual foreign secretary within a few months. He will be responsible for forging a new relationship with the EU on all fronts, and he's a passionate Remainer. So the question arises: will the EU/UK defence and security pact that he favours because there's a war on in Europe be a Trojan horse for a broader sort of pact? The idea is of course anathema to Labour as it enlists the support of Brexiters along the Red Wall to return to power, but once in power all bets should be off.
