Officials in the UK and US collaborated in a sting operation targeting the then-premier of the British Virgin Islands, a US Drug Enforcement Agency special agent has claimed in court. Andrew Fahie was arrested in April 2022 by officers posing as cartel members and is currently on trial in Miami on charges including drug smuggling and money laundering. Fahie is pleading not-guilty, and his lawyers say he believes he was “framed” by the UK. BVI is a British overseas territory, and the possibility of UK involvement in a sting against a sitting head of government has been a defining feature of the case. DEA agent Brian Witek said the UK’s National Crime Agency was first informed of the investigation into Fahie in September 2021 and “assisted” in the case prior to his arrest. There are two key questions: what the NCA told the Foreign Office – then led by Liz Truss – about the investigation, and when.
