There is perhaps nothing more London than The Savoy – yet somehow there is nothing more Manhattan than Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s Plaza Suite at The Savoy Theatre. After a successful Broadway run, the 1968 comedy from Neil Simon is a jaunt of three acts all situated in suite 719 of New York’s Plaza Hotel following three couples in their various existential plights. Although some imagination is required to believe the happily married-in-real-life Parker and Broderick’s dysfunctional relationship in the first act, it is in the deft physical comedy and quick-wit of the second two where the A-listers come to life. In a West End that feels crowded with celebrity draws for oh-so-serious plays – Sarah Snook, Nicole Scherzinger, Matt Smith, Woody Harrelson – there was something truly delightful in seeing the couple embrace some light-hearted whimsy.
At The Savoy Theatre, London until 13 April
