Polish truckers have suspended their blockade on the border with Ukraine until 1 March after reaching an agreement with the government, the country’s infrastructure minister said yesterday. The truckers have been blocking several checkpoints since last November to protest against competition from Ukrainian drivers, leaving trucks stuck for days in freezing temperatures. At least three Ukrainian drivers have died in the border queues. The blockade has caused huge damage to Kyiv’s trade and created delays for the transfer of much-needed medications and bandages into Ukraine. The deal includes more checks on Ukrainian truckers, rather than bringing back an EU permit system that was lifted after Russia’s full-scale invasion. Donald Tusk, who took office in Poland last month, is expected to visit Kyiv in the coming days.
