Police issue “threat to life” warnings to UK Sikhs

Police issue “threat to life” warnings to UK Sikhs

Last year, US security services secretly filmed Indian citizen Nikhil Gupta allegedly trying to pay a hitman $100,000 to carry out an assassination of a prominent Sikh separatist leader and joint US-Canadian citizen in New York. The news set off a storm of anxieties and conspiracy theories about New Delhi hit squads traipsing around the West trying to kill Sikhs who were encouraging dissent back home in India’s Punjab region. Now West Midlands Police have started to issue “threat to life” warnings to Sikhs living in Britain, according to reporting by The Times. It’s not clear if those warnings were issued about potential geopolitical actors or for radical groups based locally. But Jas Singh from the Sikh Federation UK said Sikh leaders in the UK were already taking measures including not travelling alone.
