Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief Wael Al Dahdouh lost his wife, son, daughter and an infant grandson during an Israeli airstrike in October, while covering the attack live on TV. On Sunday, his eldest son Hamza, also a journalist for Al Jazeera, was killed by an Israeli drone strike along with freelance journalist Mustafa Thuraya, while in a car on assignment in southern Gaza. Two others, Ahmed Al-Burash and Amer Abu Amr, were injured. Wael Al Dahdouh vowed to continue his work despite what Antony Blinken called an “unimaginable tragedy”. The Israel Defense Forces said that Sunday’s strike was aimed at targeting a “terrorist” in the vehicle, and denied the deliberate targeting of civilians, including journalists, which would constitute a war crime. Almost 80 journalists have been killed since the war in Gaza started, the single biggest death toll for journalists in a conflict zone for years – surpassing that of Ukraine over the past two years in a matter of months, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
