In September Canada accused the Indian government of involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who belonged to a movement that calls for the creation of “Khalistan”, an independent Sikh state. India called the allegations “absurd”; Washington and London, Canadian allies that view India as a critical security partner to counter China, publicly stayed pretty quiet. That may have to change. On Wednesday the FT reported that the US had thwarted a plot to kill a Sikh separatist on American soil and issued a warning to the Indian government over concerns it was involved. The paper identified the target as Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a US-Canadian dual citizen who is also part of the Khalistan movement. The White House said it was treating the claims with “utmost seriousness”.
