Lachlan takes over

Lachlan takes over

Lachlan Murdoch is now officially at the helm of Fox and News Corp, and he inherits a bursting legal in-tray. His father Rupert’s retirement this week follows a bruising year for Fox, which paid out $787.5m to the voting equipment company Dominion in one of the largest defamation settlements in US history. The row revolved around baseless allegations the company was involved in a purported plot to rig the 2020 election. But Fox is also being sued for $2.7 billion by another voting machine maker, Smartmatic; by a former producer who claims there was a “purge” of staff who refused to report only information that would “appease” Trump and his team; by a January 6th attendee who claims the network made him a scapegoat for the insurrection; and by a counter-disinformation expert for allegedly promoting lies about her. The Independent has a handy list. Lachlan’s promotion coincides with a Sky News report that Muriel McKay’s deported killer has offered to return to the UK to show her family where her body was buried 54 years ago. She was kidnapped in a case of mistaken identity — the kidnappers’ target was Anna Murdoch, Rupert’s then-wife and Lachlan’s mother.
