Live For Me

In his first release since his Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, Omar Apollo isn’t afraid to revisit painful memories as he guides the listener through his struggle to find belonging and acceptance. Set to a simple piano melody and moments of heavy percussion, the EP’s opening track, Ice Slippin, is a haunting listen. Taking us back to the winter he came out to his family, Apollo asks: “If I take back my words, would you return to me?” Heart-wrenching and soulful, Live For Me explores the singer’s attempts to survive on his own, but builds to an easy, danceable tune that charts his way to closure and acceptance. Angel examines his emotions from above, ultimately declaring he’s “too young to grow wings, too young to be an angel”. Apollo’s thoughtful, emotive lyrics are a powerful lesson in how to navigate raw and deeply personal experiences.
