After months of speculation, the story has been confirmed – Yoko Ono has left the building. The building in question is the Dakota apartment block, but The New York Times ran what could almost be considered an obituary, claiming New Yorkers were mourning her departure in much the same way Londoners might mourn ravens leaving the Tower. John and Yoko moved into the Upper West Side complex in 1973 and briefly owned five apartments there, one of which served as her studio. She stayed on after Lennon was shot dead outside, leaving the bathroom for some reason untouched. The building is a celebrity favourite thanks to its large private courtyard, and has been called home by Lauren Bacall, Leonard Bernstein, Roberta Flack, Judy Garland and Paul Simon. Buyers are interviewed by a notoriously stringent board, which has reportedly rejected Billy Joel, Madonna and Cher. Yoko is said to have moved to a farm upstate. Imagine.
