Forget duelling banjos – Caroline Calloway and her ex-best friend Natalie Beach are launching duelling memoirs. It’s the perfect influencer feud. Calloway was the so-called Gatsby of Cambridge who tweaked her grades to get into St Edmund’s College and found fame with “The Cambridge Captions”, a series of twee, somewhat literary Instagram posts. Only trouble is, Beach wrote them, not Calloway. So when Calloway landed a six-figure book deal on the strength of the Insta series, she needed Beach to do the actual, you know, writing and things all went a bit Mean Girls. Calloway reneged on the deal in 2017 and Beach wrote a tell-all confessional essay, “I Was Caroline Calloway”, in 2019. Calloway was triggered into actually writing when she found out Beach was shopping the yarn around town. Beach’s Adult Drama came out at the end of June and Calloway’s Scammer, a blend of vitriol and unwitting comedy, is available in a limited luxury edition for $65 direct from her website.
