On 23 January 2017, Quamari Barnes, a 15-year-old schoolboy from north west London, was seen singing as he left his school in Willesden. It was supposed to be like any other day.
But soon after leaving the school gates, Quamari was chased by a masked killer who ambushed him and stabbed him to death.
Knife crime is on the rise in the UK, with the number of offences involving a knife or sharp instrument increasing to just over 44,000 in the last 12 months. Overwhelmingly, the victims are young, male and black.
So this is the story of Quamari, but really, it’s the story of many young men who have found themselves victims of knife crime – and of the families, community leaders and campaigners who are trying desperately to fix the problem.
