Pitch us a story

If you have an idea for a podcast, we’d love to hear from you.

Our podcasts

Tortoise is interested in stories, not subjects. Our best podcasts have compelling characters and, at their heart, a conflict. They take the listener somewhere new. They are a window into some bigger issue or truth.

These are some Slow Newscasts we’re proud of:

– Into the dark

– Fallen women

– Lost at sea

Hunt for the porn king

– Lebedev: Lord of Siberia

Sweet Bobby should give you a sense of what we’re looking for in a multipart series.

How to pitch

Many of our stories are reported by the Tortoise team, but we are open to ideas for Slow Newscast episodes and multi-part series. If you want to pitch us a story, aim for the offbeat: we want to publish fresh stories that a) sit outside mainstream reporting on an issue or a person, or b) tell us about something or someone entirely new.

If you send us a pitch, we will read it. We will be in touch if we’re interested in commissioning it.

We produce 50 Slow Newscasts a year and a handful of multipart series, so don’t be disappointed if we choose not to move forward with your idea.

Please submit your pitch using the form below. It should get you thinking about how your story might work as a Tortoise podcast.

What is the story? What is the news peg? Why should we do it now/soon? Do you have a couple of links that might help us understand the story better? Please send us no more than three paragraphs.
Who do we care about and how do they relate to the story? Have they agreed to speak? Will they?
What previous reporting has there been on the story? What are the risks/obstacles?
Can you tell us a little about your previous reporting and/or podcasting experience? Please include a couple of clippings and a short explanation of your role in the stories you’ve sent us.
