English football means so much to so many – and the relationship England has with its national team is an emotional one. It’s been a 150 year rollercoaster of a love affair, with moments of joy, disappointment, anger, pride, heartbreak and euphoria. Over that time, the game has changed a lot – and so have the fans. Recently the game has attracted more female fans than ever, and a new generation of social media-savvy players are more connected and accessible to fans than ever before – while maintaining their A-list celebrity status. Who is the modern football fan, and has there ever been a better time to be one?
