Programme
Session 1 – We heart football: the modern football fan
With Charlie Eccleshare, Sapphire McIntosh and Andrew Butler
English football means so much to so many – and the relationship England has with its national team is an emotional one. It’s been a 150 year rollercoaster of a love affair, with moments of joy, disappointment, anger, pride, heartbreak and euphoria. Over that time, the game has changed a lot – and so have the fans. Recently the game has attracted more female fans than ever, and a new generation of social media-savvy players are more connected and accessible to fans than ever before – while maintaining their A-list celebrity status. Who is the modern football fan, and has there ever been a better time to be one? Have initiatives to improve inclusivity on the pitch been reflected in the fanbase, and how can we make sure that big money doesn’t spoil the magic of being a fan?
Session 2 – Three Lions on a shirt: Mark Pougatch in conversation with Paul Hayward
As the world gets ready for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, sports writer Paul Hayward’s new book – ‘England Football, The Biography 1872-2022’– is a compelling and unmissable account of the story of the England men’s football team. From the managers and coaches, to the players on the pitch – Who are the stars of the England team, and who are the forgotten heroes? Join us as we explore the complete story of the England football team, and how the teams of the past shaped the squad of today.
