In the summer of 2022, the NHS announced it was winding up the Gender Identity Service for children and young people based at the Tavistock Clinic. Social media discussion of the Tavistock’s service, fraught with accusations of transphobia, lack of clinical oversight and systemic bias, has this year spilled over into mainstream politics. Journalist Polly Curtis spent months trying to understand what really happened at GIDS for Tortoise’s podcast The Tavistock: Inside the Gender Clinic. Her investigation sought to clarify misconstrued or misreported aspects of the GIDS road to closure.. But questions still remain. What shape will the replacement services take? What degree of political intervention has taken place in the designing of those new clinical pathways? What lessons have been learned?
