England, at long last, has re-opened its gyms, zoos, hairdressers, and pubs with outside areas. Some pubs opened just after midnight on Monday when lockdown was eased. But Covid infections remain high and, while the vaccination programme is accelerating, around half of the population still hasn’t received its first dose. More infections and deaths are expected. So is another wave. But many businesses have gone forever. Did we re-open too soon or leave it too late? Do we now need alternative restrictions like vaccine ‘passports’? Will the economy bounce back or struggle along?
