When it comes to true love, romantic comedies teach us to reach for the stars, to find the partner of our dreams, and settle for nothing less. But here’s the thing, as much as we’re encouraged to practice self-care and pursue our happiness, relationships aren’t always picture-perfect. Compromise is inevitable, and the question arises: are our expectations of love and our partners too high?
The younger generation seems to be on to something, with ideas like polyamory and ethical non-monogamy gaining traction. Perhaps it’s time we all took a step back and questioned what romantic relationships mean to us: is it really necessary to conform to societal norms? Should we explore alternative ways of experiencing love – or should we celebrate the joy, drama and frustrations that are part of the deal in long term relationships? There’s no easy answer.
