Jeremy Hunt was appointed Chair of the influential cross-party Health and Social Care Select Committee in January 2020, just before the pandemic hit the UK. He is also the longest serving Secretary of State for Health in British history (2012 to 2018). He has made a number of personal interventions into government lockdown strategy – calling for much tougher restrictions in January, and cautioning the government against easing lockdown until a ‘South-Korean style’ intensive contact tracing system is in place. He has recently conceded that decisions he made while serving as Health Secretary – particularly in relation to pandemic preparation – put the health service “on the back foot” when the virus hit.
