Why giants? Well, the first piece commissioned for this, our sixth short book of long stories, was about a literal giant, the blue whale. Simon Barnes’s cautious optimism about this mighty creature seemed a good place to start. But then a metaphorical giant came along: Rachael Blackmore. When she won the Grand National, she beat not only the field but hundreds of years of myth and misogyny.
