The Responsibility100 Index

A ranking of the FTSE 100 companies on their commitment to key social, environmental and ethical objectives, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Holding companies to account

In 2015, the UN published the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

They are comprised of 17 individual targets spanning a wide range of topics from poverty and inequality to climate change and biodiversity.

The Responsibility100 Index, developed by Tortoise, has been established to examine how much each of the FTSE 100 companies are doing to ensure a safe, fair and sustainable world.

Rankings

Based on some refinements to our methodology and further consultation with the FTSE 100, we have updated the rankings of the Responsibility 100 Index. The latest rankings below are updated as of October 15th, 2020.

It is possible to sort the results of the Index by sector and alphabetically.

The rankings include the new ‘Talk’ Score which indicates the level of commitment to measurable and time-bound targets and memberships to certain organisations.

Our approach

The Responsibility100 Index uses data from a range of sources; including non-governmental organisation research, annual and sustainability reporting, web-based searching and information from regulatory bodies.

The indicators that comprise the Index have been selected with the aims of:

  • Reflecting publicly-available information rather than proprietary sources
  • Speaking to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the various targets that it sets
  • Providing a comprehensive portrait of each company according to the available data in order to establish comparability
