Why this story?

Covid-19 is irrevocably changing the world around us. Millions of people are anxious and exposed. And in this climate of fear, misinformation proliferates and replicates – a virus of another kind.

But just like Covid-19, misinformation must be tracked and eradicated. Never has it been more important to arm people with reliable, trustworthy information about how to stay safe – and how to make sense of the ways our societies are changing at breakneck speed around us.

So we are launching a new project, The Infodemic. This is the first part in an ongoing investigation into how fake news spreads in a pandemic.

We want to help you figure out what and who you can trust in this time of great uncertainty. So we’ve also profiled accounts to follow from leading epidemiologists and scientists, and tomorrow, we launch a new digital dashboard compiling essential data to help you make sense of what’s happening. Basia Cummings, Editor
