Naliia tells us about how she woke up this morning – to the sound of explosions in Ukraine

Hi, I’m Phoebe Davis. I’m a reporter at Tortoise. I want to introduce you to Naliia, whose world was turned upside down by the sound of explosions. And who’s trying to figure out how to stay safe.

Transcript:

Hi, my name is Naliia. I’m from Kyiv. It’s February the 24th 2022.

Today, I woke up at 5.20 in the morning, and I felt really scared because I heard some really loud explosions.

We gathered all of our essential things together, we packed them into a backpack. And we went with our car to gather our friends in one flat so we can decide what to do next.

Now I am near a bomb shelter in Kyiv. And I’m waiting to see what is going to happen next.

The most important thing I want people listening to this to understand about Ukraine today is that we are scared. You cannot be emotionally or physically or mentally prepared for war. But we are determined.

We don’t want to give up and we won’t give up. We believe in our people. We believe in our army. We believe in international help. And we really hope for the best.

But at the same time, we’re really ready to fight.
