Mbappé in the shop window

Mbappé in the shop window

Kylian Mbappé has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. Is the superstar about to revive their fortunes?

Hi, I’m Andrew and this is the Playmaker.

One story every day to make sense of the world of football.

Today could Kylian Mbappé revitalise La Liga?

Sometimes, when footballers want a move away from their current side, they try harder in games to alert other teams to their skills.

It’s called “putting yourself in the shop window”.

Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappé has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for some time now.

And so what better way to put himself in the shop window than scoring a stunning last-gasp winner for PSG against Real Madrid in the Champions League?

“Oh what a goal! What a sensational goal! Well he might be a Galactico next season but he’s the toast of Paris tonight.”

PSG v Real Madrid commentary

His boss, Mauricio Pochettino, said: “It’s hard to find the words to say how good he is.”

There was plenty of admiration in defeat from Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti too.

He said that he was the “best in Europe” right now.

And when Lionel Messi has an off night, there’s a chance to shine even brighter.

“PSG have a penalty. It’s Messi… and it’s saved by Courtois. What a big moment in the Champions League last-16 tie.”

PSG v Real Madrid commentary

It’s not like this has been a secret courtship of Kylian Mbappé by Real Madrid.

President Florentino Perez stated publicly that he would’ve liked to have completed his signing back in January.

There’ve been concerns lately that interest in Spanish football is waning because of a lack of players considered as superstars in La Liga.

“I actually think that Mbappe and Haaland will end up in Spain. I just think that Spanish football will demand that those two players go there to give them that X factor that they had for so many years with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, which has been lost for a year or so.”

BT Sport analysis

While Kylian Mbappé certainly has that star quality, there’s other reasons why he’s a good fit for Real Madrid.

He’s out of contract this summer. That means he can sign a pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid anytime from now, and he can join them for free in the summer.

After the match with PSG last week, Kylian Mbappé replied to reporters’ questions in perfect Spanish.

Of course, that only intensified the rumours even further.

And that’s on top of the pictures of Kylian Mbappé as a young boy with a bedroom full of Real Madrid posters, with pictures of his idol: Cristiano Ronaldo.

“This season, to win the Champions League, are you really looking past PSG? Why would you leave that?”

“Because he clearly wants to play for Real Madrid. It’s a draw isn’t it? It’s the sexy kit, it’s the history of the club…”

Talksport discussion

While last week’s late wonder goal on the biggest stage certainly didn’t hurt Kylian Mbappé, he didn’t actually need to put himself in the shop window.

Real Madrid have already made it clear that they want him.

La Liga president, Javier Tebas, wants him – maybe needs him – in Spain.

The question is: what does Mbappé want?

The signs do seem to point to Real Madrid.

But like any ongoing transfer saga, it may well keep fans guessing for a while longer yet.
