AFC Wimbledon managing director resigns after sexist comments revealed

The managing director of an English football club resigned after he was recorded making sexist and abusive comments about one of the club’s female executives. In a covert recording shared with the Times, it is claimed that 42 year-old Danny Macklin can be heard describing Rebecca Markham, the club’s ticketing manager, as a “f**king slut”. Macklin is also reported to say he wants to put her “through a f**king window”. AFC Wimbledon did not reveal the reason for Macklin’s departure earlier this month, praising his “commitment” to the club. Macklin said at the time that he would be spending some “much-needed time” with his family before “taking on” his next challenge. The audio was secretly recorded by a part-time staff member, Matthew Wells. After being presented with the recording by the Times, Macklin declined to comment for “legal reasons”. AFC Wimbledon, a League Two club which is 75 per cent owned by a supporters trust and 10 per cent owned by Asos founder Nick Robertson, said it acted “appropriately” to resolve the matter when it was made aware of Macklin’s behaviour.
