The French are famed for their pernickety bureaucracy, but this time they might be on to something. Earlier this week, France’s National Frequencies Agency said that the iPhone 12 emits too much electromagnetic radiation when in direct contact with a person’s skin. Apple was ordered to stop all sales immediately and must try to fix the issue with a software update. But if that fails, it will have to recall every single iPhone 12 sold in France since it was released in 2020. Now Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands are all looking into France’s concerns. The investigation could quickly snowball into pan-EU measures, which would hit Apple’s stock hard. Apple says it is contesting the findings. The UK has, so far, said nothing.
