Elon Musk has threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League for “trying to kill his platform”, now known as X. On X, Musk posted that the ADL, which campaigns against bigotry and particularly anti-semitism, was the main reason for the platform’s recent 60 per cent decline in advertising sales. The billionaire is also suing the Center for Countering Digital Hate – again, for lost ad revenue. Musk posted that he is in favour of free speech but against anti-semitism “of any kind”, but both campaign groups have reported an increase, or lack of moderation, of hate speech on X since Musk took over – including anti-semitism. Musk has called the accusations “utterly false”, but major brands have pulled their ads after being flagged as appearing next to pro-Nazi content. Does Musk think blaming anti-hate speech groups for X’s financial difficulties will distract attention from his decision to cut staffing by nearly three quarters?
