The collective ambition of the UK’s 30 biggest food companies puts them on track for an estimated temperature pathway of 1.8°C – broadly in line with the Paris agreement. However, analysis from the Tortoise Better Food Index has found that only 1 in 3 companies are demonstrating the pace of change needed to actually meet these targets. Instead, Britain’s food giants have increased their emissions intensity by 5.5 per cent since last year. The trend needs to be reversed, generating as much or more food with a lower carbon footprint. Taking responsibility for emissions is a crucial step in this process, but one that many seem to be struggling with.
