This week in Tortoise: Slow Down for Summer

You can tell it’s the height of British summer by how much rain is falling. The streets are slick, the water table has risen, and we Tortoises are thinking about retreating temporarily into our shells.

The next two weeks are going to be even less hasty than usual. We’re calling it our Slow Down for Summer. We’d already paused ThinkIns until September, and now there won’t be any new Slow Newscasts nor Slow Views for the fortnight up to Monday 16 August, as we ready ourselves for an autumn full of stories, discussions, campaigns and other splendiferous developments.

But this doesn’t mean that we’re falling completely silent. Far from it. As part of the Slow Down for Summer, our editors have selected some of their favourite podcasts to listen to, articles to read, and ThinkIns to watch from Tortoise’s 2021 so far. These selections will be added to each day, and will be available through the Today feed of the app and the homepage of the website.

In fact, if you visit either of those places today, you’ll encounter today’s picks: a return to our Hidden Homicides project, an account of the many uncounted deaths of women each year; Anand Menon’s dispatch from the year of Covid, a year in which he lost most of his close family; and the catch-up footage from the former Governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney’s visit to our virtual newsroom.

There will also be new words and sounds for your consideration. Our Sensemaker team is going to keep on delivering their daily newsletters and podcasts for the next two weeks… and beyond, of course… and how could it not be so? There’s always some sense that needs to be made.

We hope that you enjoy these summer weeks — on Tortoise and outside of it. If you know anyone who might enjoy our way of doing journalism, there’s currently a promotion for a year’s standard membership for £50. We’d be grateful if you’d pass it around.

Best wishes,

Peter Hoskin
