This week, please…
Listen to Pariah, Ceri Thomas’ podcast on the pursuit of Harvey Proctor.
Pariah is the life story of Harvey Proctor and, in a way, a story about our lives as well. On his side, it’s an extraordinary and sometimes brutal morality tale of a gay man who held extreme political views, and whose life was wrecked twice over by scandals that had nothing – apparently – to do with his politics; first a tabloid “gay sex sting,” and later the notorious police investigation Operation Midland. On our side, it raises questions about the treatment of gay people in public life, the destructive power of a moral frenzy, and whether, in the end, we’ve been prepared even recently to close our eyes to homophobia in the press, the police and public opinion. Across four podcasts, with the first released today, Ceri Thomas examines the life of one man and our political culture in Pariah: the pursuit of Harvey Proctor.
The Tortoise Climate Summit is on Thursday. We’ll be launching a major update to the Tortoise Responsibility100 Index. We’ll also be holding a series of ThinkIns. And we’ll be bringing together a powerful coalition to find answers to Accelerating Net Zero. You can find details of all the day’s sessions – and book a ticket – here. Please join us.
As for the rest of the week’s ThinkIns:
- This evening, at 6.30pm BST, we’ll welcome the authors Sathnam Sanghera and William Dalrymple into our virtual newsroom – to discuss the fallout from Sathnam’s recent book Empireland.
- On Tuesday morning, at our business ThinkIn, we anticipate the final loosening of lockdown and wonder: how will going back to work work?
- And on Friday, for the latest Creative Sensemaker Live, we’ll put on our fanciest clothes and sort through the highs and lows of last night’s Oscars.
Listen in. Join in. And let us know what you think.
